The Gathering, June 3
Since no Cherry Festival was in the works this year, the Historical Society planned The Gathering, a community-focused festival to take place after the City of San Leandro’s June 4th Cherry Parade. Thanks to the City of San Leandro for generous funding and support! All the entertainment and booths featured people, organizations, and businesses from San Leandro. An estimated 10,000 people attended, exploring the booths, watching entertainment on two stages, visiting the Historic Little Brown Church and seeing the Here Is a Sign exhibit, and viewing the new housing discrimination and Black history exhibit at the History Museum. The History Museum also provided games for children in the Casa Peralta courtyard. The Chamber of Commerce sold beer, wine, and their special sangria at The Bistro, and the Food Truck Mafia cooked up delicious meals and treats. Many thanks to Evelyn Gonzalez, who organized this event, and to her family, the Historical Society Board, and dozens of volunteers who set up, staffed, and cleaned up on the day of the event. It was a tremendous team effort!
San Leandro Architecture & Home Tour, May 14
This event sold about 170 tickets for a tour of nine buildings in four San Leandro neighborhoods. Participants were provided with a tour booklet packed with details of neighborhood and architectural history. Many thanks to professional architectural historian Josh Bevan for providing the architectural notes on each home, the tour booklet committee for a wonderful tour book, and the homeowners who opened their homes for this tour.
Brian Copeland in Not a Genuine Black Man, February 20
Our kick-off 150th event in February presented Brian Copeland’s outstanding play of his experiences as an eight-year-old when his Black family moved to San Leandro in 1972. High school students were able to attend for free thanks to a donation from the San Leandro Education Foundation. Thanks to everyone who joined us for an afternoon of brilliant theater and San Leandro history.

Commemorating the Japanese Experience Before, During, and After World War II, September 8, 2021
Heartfelt thanks to the writers and story tellers Kix Kato, Takeo Kato, Harry Kawahara, and Digger Sasaki, whose moving stories connected us to Japanese American lives as they left the camps and rebuilt their lives in the East Bay after World War II.
