The Casa Peralta --Three Women, Culture Change, & a Legacy
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this event to explore Casa Peralta history. Passcode for Recording Link L4.+Pf37 |
Change -- it seems to be overwhelming us these days. But change has always been part of the human condition. Find out about two women born in Mexican California, their niece born in American California, the American takeover that transformed their Californio lives, and their amazing home that melded Spanish and American culture into the crown jewel of San Leandro historic buildings. Casa Peralta photographs from the early 1900s to the present enhance the talk.
The Casa Peralta needs your support. Let your council member know you want to see this historic building repaired and restored.
We launched our 2021 fundraiser, a self-guided tour to explore local history, on September 25. Participants have had so much fun and feedback has been so positive that we have made the tour available until May 1.
Then & Now Tour: A "Then & Now" tour is a tour that provides you with background history and photographs of what a particular site used to be. We created the tour to explore 14 sites all over San Leandro. Registrants get a Site List and map with QR codes and links to connect to almost a hundred historical photographs and background history about the sites. Sites include Bay Fair Mall, San Leandro Plaza, the Marina, Westgate Center, Fairmont Hospital, and many more. The Site List and map will be emailed when you register. Tour links will be available until November 30 (and may be extended by popular demand).
Drive, bicycle, or walk with QR codes or links: Print the Site List to use your cell phone and QR codes and/or save the same Site List as a digital file on your cell phone or tablet and use the links to access the historical photographs and background history for each site. QR codes or links take you to historical photographs and background history for each site. Do the tour of any or all sites at your convenience. Keep it in your car or on your cell phone and you can stop to check out the historical photos and history while doing errands around town.
"Tour" from home: Save the Site List on our computer, cell phone, or tablet. Use the links on this digital file to do a virtual tour from home and see larger photos.
San Leandro History Walk: Add this walking tour created by the City of San Leandro as you explore the downtown area. QR codes provide links to videos with historical photographs and background history. The San Leandro History Walk brochures may be picked up from the San Leandro History Museum. The videos are also accessible from the City of San Leandro website https://www.sanleandro.org/about/hwoei.asp
Scroll down until you see "City of San Leandro History Walk"
These sites are not duplicated in the Then & Now Tour.
Registration for the the Historical Society's Then & Now self-guided tour is $10 per car. The San Leandro History Walk provided by the City of San Leandro is free.
We set the basic price very low so more people can participate, but we need to raise funds for our continued operation. Please consider an additional donation. We are considering many exciting events for San Leandro's 150th birthday next year, including a historic home tour, podcasts, a heritage fair, a pictorial timeline of San Leandro using digitized aerial maps, and more. But we can't do events without funds. Please help at whatever level you can.
We will email you the tour brochure with QR codes and links after receiving your payment. "Register" blue button above will take you to EventBrite to process your payment.

THANK YOU to everyone who attended our Open House -- it was great to see people at our historic building again. And special thanks to Council Member Pete Ballew, Council Member Bryan Azevedo, SLUSD Board Trustee Evelyn Gonzalez and SLUSD Board Trustee Christian Rodriguez for cutting the ribbon to launch our celebration.
The San Leandro Historical Society invites you to a FREE Open House to celebrate the newly-refinished walls, wainscoting, and floor of our historic building. This will be an outdoor courtyard event. Guests wearing masks will be allowed inside in small groups for a limited time.
Our heartfelt thanks for your donations that funded interior painting and wainscoting refinishing, and to Christian Rodriguez and Simple Floors for the donated labor and materials that restored our original floor to a beautiful finish.

Seeking San Leandro African American Stories
What brought people to San Leandro from the four corners of the earth? What gifts did they bring? What were their problems? What problems remain unsolved?
The San Leandro History Museum, in partnership with the Historical Society, is researching for a new exhibit called "Community Voices." The exhibit will explore the shifting demographics in San Leandro that began in the mid-20th century and continues today. In the first phase of the project, research will focus on African American life in San Leandro. The second phase will focus on the Asian community, and the third phase will focus on the Latino community.
Research for the first phase of the project, focused on African Americans, is underway. Your story of African American life in San Leandro will add depth and reality to statistics and facts and help explain how our city became the vibrant, diverse community it is today.
How would you describe life here? Did you grow up in San Leandro or move from another city or country? What are your experiences, successes, or challenges? Do you or did you participate in making any changes in your community? Would you like to share any photos or documents to help tell your story? Go down in history by sharing your part in San Leandro's progression/evolution. The new exhibit will expand the historical information offered by the Museum and will become part of the historical archives.
Although the museum is currently closed, we would still like to hear from you. If you are interested, please contact Museum Curator Addie Silveira by email at asilveira@sanleandro.org. The San Leandro Museum is administered by the San Leandro Public Library.
