The Casa Peralta Restoration Campaign
Save the Casa!
Casa Peralta, a historic house museum in downtown San Leandro, is a significant element of our city's historical, architectural, and cultural heritage. It is a tangible connection to 19th-century Spanish land grant families and the stories of their ancestors, dating back to 1776 and the first migration of families from Mexico to California.
Originally constructed in 1901 as the home of Ludovina Peralta Ivey, it was transformed into a grand Spanish Revival casa in 1927 by Herminia Peralta Dargie. The craftsmanship, beauty, history, and culture represented at Casa Peralta are vital components of our local, state, and national history. The property represents two distinct periods of American history and the melding of colonial Mexican and American cultures.
Unfortunately, time has taken a toll on Casa Peralta. Beyond what the city can currently fund, many repairs are needed to ensure that it continues to educate, inspire, and stand strong as one of our city’s few remaining historically significant sites. We need your help.
Here are some of the most pressing issues Casa Peralta faces today.

Tile Restoration
Damaged antique tiles The house, fountain, and grounds feature gorgeous antique tiles. Some of these color-saturated tiles imported from Spain are decorative and some tell the story of Don Quixote. Many of these tiles have been damaged and have fallen off structures. |
Roof Replacement
Well beyond the end of its life Old houses have old roofs, and Casa Peralta's is very old. The roof, gutters, and downspouts need to be replaced to prevent leaks and water damage. Broken terracotta roof tiles must be replaced. |
Fountain Repairs
Broken tiles and leaks The garden fountain is a focal piece of the grounds, but it's currently inoperable and in bad shape. Underground leaks need to be addressed and broken tiles need to be replaced before the fountain can function and become a gathering spot once again. |
Why Save the Casa Peralta?
What makes this historic house so important?
The Casa's irreplaceable architecture and importance to California history have earned its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Only two locations in San Leandro have the honor of being on the Register.
Sadly, many San Leandro historic homes and buildings are gone. The craftsmanship of these architectural gems is a lost art. We can turn the tide of what has been a decades-long practice of failing to recognize the importance of preserving our heritage. We can save our irreplaceable architecture and the stories of who we are and from where we've come.
