San Leandro was the Alameda County seat from 1856 to 1873. The courthouse was built in 1856. It collapsed in the 1868 earthquake. A temporary courthouse was built, but the county seat moved to Oakland a few years later. St. Leander's purchased the old courthouse site and opened St. Mary's School in 1881. In 1926, the old St. Mary's was replaced with a new two-story school. In 1955, St. Mary's was renamed St. Leander.

They remind us to take another look at these often fading, damaged, and disappearing San Leandro signs. Have you noticed them when you're driving around town? Do you have. memories of these places? Rediscover some San Leandro treasures! A handout is available to help you find these signs around town.
