Building awareness and appreciation of the history of our unique and diverse city and supporting the preservation of historic sites and the historic legacy of San Leandro.
Black Lives Matter
We stand in support of the peaceful civil rights protests that have followed the death of George Floyd. Protests across our country and the world send a powerful message that we must root out institutionalized racism and create a more just and equitable America NOW.
In 1960, redlining and housing discrimination kept San Leandro 99.3% white. Today, we celebrate a diverse and vibrant community, although we know there is still a long way to go to achieve justice and equal opportunity for everyone. As a historical society, we work to document the past and share the stories of all San Leandro’s people, to inform and create a better future. If you will share a photograph, document, or story—of discrimination, of the city’s transition to a diverse community, of the past, or of San Leandro now—please contact us.
We also believe that listening to the black community and educating ourselves to become actively engaged anti-racists are essential to creating a better future. Click the button for a list of books, articles, videos, and more, created by two black women as a resource for anti-racism education:
